Tale of a rambutan tree
Monday 1248
For most people who lives in kampung, do noticed that it is the fruit season now.
Rambutan, durian, mango, mangosteen… you name it.
There are everywhere, ripe and ready to be plucked.
Since the last two weeks and due to Gentut being in the workshop, I’ve been commuting back and forth from Kgau to KK via taxi. The taxis always use the kampung route where I am able to see ripe fruits along the road - mostly rambutan cos their color is just so…urrm…glaring.
And I thought, “Wow! It is that easy to plant rambutan tree, huh?”
I eat almost all kind of fruits.
But being a heat-prone person, I can’t eat to my heart’s content.
Last week, I was walking Bam-Bam at the back of my parents house where the only rambutan tree is located.
Passing by, I plucked two. Repeat, two rambutans to eat.
The next day, I woke up with a sore throat and was wondering how on earth did I get it.
When I passed by the rambutan tree again later in the evening and had another round of plucking, then I realized the cause of my sore throat.
Yesterday, I was tempted by the delicious looking bloody red rambutan at the back of my in-laws house.
Failed by attempt to pluck the rambutan using a bamboo pole, I climbed up the roof from the back stairs.
Plucked about 7-8 rambutans and had nose bleed soon that night.
Ha!

You know, eating rambutans or any fruits that have been planted by yourself is indeed a great satisfaction.
No, I have never planted any fruits before but I could see it through my mom’s eyes as well as my parents in-law’s eyes.
They harvested the fruits with great contentment.
Never bored of harvesting them even if that means they have to climb up the tree instead of asking someone younger to do it.

Picture of my mom taken last year
“Kalau saya sudah tiada, siapa lah mau pigi putik tu rambutan lagi ah?” she sometimes said to me.
I just smiled.
But deep in my heart, I know, when the time comes, whoever that is given the honor to take over the house, will eventually be the one responsible for the rambutan tree.
Being a daughter who is married to someone not from my hometown, I knew my chances on the rambutan tree is slim.
Hence, I always have this dream to have our own house, on our own land with lots of rambutan trees surrounding it.
So that I can take care of my own rambutan tree, reap its fruits and have the ultimate satisfaction of eating the fruits of my own sweat.
Now, where’s my dream house again?

PS: I’m still on holiday today
Until next post!
*hugs*

ohh. and fruits really r everywhere now. even di elevator of my office building smells of durian.
Yabah. Yesterday while on the way to church, suddenly ada durian odour bah out of nowhere. We made an assumption that the double cabin in front of us had durians loaded on its back. LOL!
Even school children pun bawa durian mo jual di school. By right, it’s forbidden lah tapi apa mcm, cigu2 juga yg mau beli.

How do we know that rambutans are heaty? Is it a scientific fact ka? I always wondered how people determine heaty from cool fruits. Old wives’ tale?
LOL! I don’t know.
Old wives’ tale lah ni. Passed down from generation to generation.
I just ikut cos that’s the best possible answer to why people tend to have coughing, sore throat and in my case nose bleed when consuming fruits like rambutan and durian.
And oh, watermelon is known as cooling fruit. Too much of it can trigger asthma.
At least, that’s what happened to my kid bro before lah as told by mom.

Nothing beats having your own Rambutan tree. Iya, memang buli saja bili di sana kadai or supermarket tapi they’re not fresh.
I prefer the yellow ones… sedap cam kelapa rasa dia
Ba, cuba2 la piara munyit… pandai putik buah tu… hehe
nasib baik sia jenis yang tahan tukul… buli makan rambutan berguni-guni!
Owh jarang sia jumpa tu yellow rambutan..mostly yg merah saja.
Hahaha…piara munyit? Ermmm…nanti sia suggest sama mama sia.
Uishhh berguni…I envy you!
Sia buli juga lah kalau mo keras kepala mo makan byk2 tapi gallon2 lah air mo minum.
Kalau durian, gerenti keluar ulcer mulut sia. Bagus kalau satu, ini mo berbiji2 bah di dalam mulut.

& rambutan is my most fav local fruit.. My rambutan tree blm berbuah lg til nw, 2 years already…hmp…
Hi Erin!
I’m sure it will berbuah juga that. How u planted it, If it’s through seeding, normally will take 5 yrs before it produces fruits.
Jangan saja your rambutan tree is a ‘male tree’ lah…produce flowers but no fruits
